Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession concerned with human movement and physical function. Physiotherapists help people recover from injury, manage long-term conditions, and maintain mobility and independence across the whole span of life. The profession operates across a wide range of clinical settings, including hospitals, community health centres, sports environments, and specialist rehabilitation units, and physiotherapists work as core members of multidisciplinary healthcare teams alongside doctors, nurses, and occupational therapists.

At Glasgow Caledonian University, you will study physiotherapy on a four-year full-time programme designed to prepare you for professional registration and clinical practice. The course covers the major areas of physiotherapy practice, including musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain and sports injuries, neurological rehabilitation following stroke or brain injury, and respiratory care for conditions affecting the lungs and breathing. You will also develop skills in health promotion and preventive approaches, recognising that physiotherapy is as much about helping people stay well as it is about treating illness.

Theory and clinical practice are integrated throughout the programme, and you will spend significant time in supervised practice placements that place you in real healthcare environments with real patients. This hands-on experience is central to developing the clinical reasoning, communication, and professional judgment that the role demands.

The curriculum draws on anatomy, physiology, exercise science, and evidence-based practice, equipping you to assess patients, design treatment plans, and evaluate outcomes. You will develop the interpersonal skills needed to work sensitively with patients who may be in pain, distress, or adjusting to significant changes in their physical capability.

Graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and to work as qualified physiotherapists in the NHS, private practice, or sport. Many go on to specialise in areas such as paediatrics, women's health, or oncology. Postgraduate study, clinical doctorates, and research careers in rehabilitation science are also pathways open to physiotherapy graduates.
