About this course

Planning and real estate together address some of the most consequential questions about how cities, towns and regions develop. Urban planning is concerned with how land is used and developed, how places are shaped through policy and regulation, and how communities and environments are protected or enhanced through the decisions of planners, developers and government. Real estate brings a commercial and financial dimension to these questions, examining how property markets work, how investment decisions are made and how the value of land and buildings is created and managed.

The two disciplines are closely related in practice, and studying them together gives you a genuinely comprehensive view of the built environment sector.

At the University of Manchester, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and a work placement, giving you direct professional experience in planning or property before you graduate. You will study planning law and policy, urban design, housing, transport and infrastructure, property economics, investment appraisal, sustainability and environmental planning, and the governance frameworks that shape development decisions. The programme develops both the analytical skills to evaluate complex spatial and economic problems and the professional competencies expected of planners and real estate practitioners.

Graduates move into careers with local authorities, development companies, planning consultancies, property investment firms, housing associations and central government. Planning graduates often work towards chartered membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), while real estate graduates may seek the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). The combination of planning and real estate expertise is particularly valuable in commercial development, regeneration and strategic planning roles, and further study at postgraduate level is a common route for those who want to specialise.
