About this course

Plants are the foundation of almost every ecosystem on Earth. Through photosynthesis they fix the solar energy that powers nearly all life, they produce the oxygen we breathe, regulate water cycles, and form the basis of the food systems that sustain human civilisation. Plant biology is the discipline that examines how plants work at every level, from the molecular mechanisms inside a single cell through to the dynamics of whole plant communities, and it is increasingly central to tackling some of the most pressing challenges humanity faces: feeding a growing population, adapting agriculture to a changing climate, and conserving biodiversity.

At Aberystwyth University, this three-year, full-time programme draws on research strengths that make the institution a distinctive place to study the subject. Aberystwyth hosts internationally recognised plant breeding programmes, plant genetic resources and databases, botanic garden collections, and the National Plant Phenomics Centre, which uses advanced imaging and data science to understand how plants grow and respond to their environments. You will develop deep knowledge of plant physiology, genetics, cell biology, and ecology, learning to work with living material in laboratories and in the field, in a campus set within countryside that supports a wide range of habitats and species.

The programme connects fundamental science with applied questions around agriculture, horticulture, and environmental management.

A typical entry tariff of 104 points makes the programme accessible to a range of students with a background in the biological sciences. Graduates from plant biology programmes go on to careers in plant breeding and agricultural research, botanical gardens and conservation, environmental agencies, the food and beverage industry, the agrochemical and seed sectors, and scientific research institutions. Plant scientists are also increasingly in demand in the bioenergy, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology industries, as plant-derived compounds and materials attract growing commercial interest.
