About this course

Polish and Ukrainian are two Slavic languages of Central and Eastern Europe whose histories are interwoven in ways that are both complex and deeply significant. Polish is the official language of Poland, a nation of nearly forty million people with a rich literary tradition and a pivotal role in European history, from the Solidarity movement to the post-1989 democratic transition. Ukrainian is the language of one of Europe's largest countries, with a literary and cultural tradition of considerable depth that has gained renewed global attention as Ukraine's significance in European affairs has become undeniable.

Studying the two languages together provides a uniquely valuable lens on one of the most important regions of the contemporary world.

At University College London, this four-year programme develops proficiency in both Polish and Ukrainian alongside engagement with the cultures, histories, and literatures they represent. You will work on both languages at an advanced level throughout the programme, studying grammar, developing reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, and engaging with literary and non-literary texts in both languages. The programme situates the two languages within their shared and distinct histories, exploring the long and complicated relationship between Poland and Ukraine as well as the distinct national traditions, political experiences, and cultural identities of each country.

UCL has outstanding expertise in Slavonic languages and is one of the leading centres for the study of East and Central European cultures in the UK.

Graduates with this combination of languages are exceptionally well placed for careers in diplomacy, the foreign service, journalism, translation and interpreting, international organisations, academic research, cultural relations, and non-governmental organisations working in the region. Further postgraduate study in Slavonic studies, Eastern European history, translation, or area studies is a natural pathway for those who wish to develop their expertise further.
