Politics and Modern Languages
Politics and modern languages is a combination that trains you to understand both the systems through which power is exercised and the linguistic and cultural tools through which it is communicated. Political science develops your ability to analyse institutions, ideologies, international relations and the forces that drive political change; a modern language gives you the ability to engage with a different culture on its own terms, which is transformative both intellectually and professionally. At the University of Exeter, this three-year full-time degree includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, making it one of the most richly structured programmes of its kind.
The language strand is available in several major European languages, and the combination of political depth and linguistic fluency is genuinely distinctive.
You will study comparative politics, international relations, political theory and policy analysis alongside advanced language skills, literature and cultural study in your chosen language. The year abroad places your linguistic and political learning in an immersive international context, and the work placement gives you experience in a professional setting relevant to your career ambitions. Exeter has strong research in politics and a modern languages department with breadth across European languages and cultures.

Graduates pursue careers in diplomacy, the civil service, international organisations, journalism, European institutions, political parties and NGOs. The combination of political analytical skills and a modern language is particularly valued in any career that involves working across borders, whether in government, international business, development organisations or the media. Many graduates also proceed to postgraduate study in international relations, European studies, politics or law, and the degree is a recognised pathway into the Diplomatic Service and related careers.
