Politics and Sociology

Politics and sociology address from different but complementary directions the questions that matter most about how societies are organised and how they change. Politics examines the formal and informal structures of power: how governments are formed, how policies are made, how political ideologies shape collective life, and how citizens and movements seek to influence those with power. Sociology examines the underlying social structures within which political life takes place: how class, race, gender, and culture shape the opportunities available to different people, and how social solidarity, division, and change operate.

At Sussex you will engage with both disciplines rigorously, developing skills in political analysis, sociological theory, and social scientific research methods. Politics modules introduce you to political theory, comparative government, international relations, and the analysis of contemporary political movements and events. Sociology brings the structural and cultural dimensions, examining inequality, identity, community, and the social forces that unite and divide contemporary societies.

The three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who need it, a sandwich placement year, and a year abroad, providing both practical professional experience and international exposure. The work placement component gives you real experience in a relevant organisation and the chance to build professional contacts.

Graduates pursue careers in the civil service, NGOs, social research, policy, journalism, education, community work, the voluntary sector, and a wide range of other professional contexts where understanding how society and politics interact is valuable. Many students continue to postgraduate study in politics, sociology, social policy, or public administration.
