Politics, Philosophy & Law

Politics, philosophy and law is one of the most ambitious interdisciplinary programmes available at undergraduate level, and at King's College London this four-year degree is the first of its kind in the UK. It is a genuinely integrated programme co-taught by the Dickson Poon School of Law, the Department of Political Economy and the Department of Philosophy, and it offers students the distinctive opportunity to engage seriously with all three disciplines while simultaneously achieving a qualifying law degree. The combination reflects a conviction that law, politics and philosophy illuminate one another in ways that studying any one in isolation cannot capture.

You will receive comprehensive legal training across the core areas of English law alongside engagement with contemporary political economy and the philosophical traditions that underlie legal and political thought. The philosophical dimension sharpens your ability to analyse concepts, evaluate arguments and engage with questions about justice, rights, power and moral obligation that lie behind both legal doctrine and political practice. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study in a different legal and academic system and to broaden your perspective on how law, politics and philosophy interact in different national contexts.

Graduates of this programme are exceptionally well placed for careers in law, politics, policy and beyond. The combination of a qualifying law degree with training in political economy and philosophy makes graduates competitive in legal practice, public policy, academic research, journalism and the civil service. Many graduates go on to qualify as solicitors or barristers, while others pursue careers in international organisations, think-tanks, NGOs and public affairs.

Some move into academic research in law, philosophy or political science. The breadth and rigour of the programme makes its graduates genuinely distinctive in fields where the ability to think across disciplinary boundaries is increasingly valued.
