Politics is the study of power: how it is acquired, exercised, contested, and constrained in human societies. It encompasses the formal institutions of government and the law, the informal processes of persuasion, coalition, and conflict through which collective decisions are shaped, the ideological traditions that have provided competing visions of the good society, and the international systems through which states and other actors interact. It is a discipline of immediate relevance to anyone who wants to understand how the world works and why it takes the forms it does.

At Glasgow you will engage with the full range of political analysis, studying political theory from ancient Greece to contemporary debates, comparative politics across different democratic and non-democratic systems, international relations, European integration, and the specific institutions and processes of British and Scottish politics. You will develop skills in political analysis, critical reading, argument construction, and empirical research, engaging with both quantitative and qualitative approaches to understanding political phenomena. The four-year full-time MA (Hons) programme gives you the depth to engage seriously with the discipline, and the year abroad provides the opportunity to study politics from a different national vantage point, which is particularly valuable in a subject where comparative perspective is intellectually essential.

Graduates pursue careers in the civil service, politics and public affairs, journalism, international organisations, NGOs, research and policy institutes, think tanks, law, and a wide range of other professional contexts where understanding how power operates matters. Politics graduates are also sought after in the private sector, particularly in roles involving regulatory affairs, government relations, and corporate strategy in politically sensitive industries. Many students continue to postgraduate study in politics, international relations, law, or public policy.
