Politics with International Relations

Politics with International Relations is a degree for those who want to understand both the domestic workings of political systems and the ways in which states and other actors interact in a complex and contested international environment. Politics examines constitutions, elections, parties, public policy, and the theories of power and legitimacy that underpin them. International relations extends that analysis to the global level, asking how states pursue their interests, how international institutions shape behaviour, and how conflict, trade, and cooperation operate across borders.

The combination gives you a comprehensive view of political life from local government to the United Nations.

At Aston University, this three-year, full-time degree develops your analytical and critical thinking skills through the study of both domestic and global political phenomena. You will examine how political systems are structured and how they function in practice, explore theories of international relations from realism and liberalism to constructivism, and engage with contemporary challenges including security, trade, migration, climate governance, and human rights. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities, which give you the chance to apply your academic learning in a professional context, and also includes the possibility of a year abroad.

Graduates in politics and international relations work in the civil service, central and local government, international organisations, think tanks, NGOs, and the private sector. Roles in policy analysis, public affairs, advocacy, diplomacy, and international development are among the most common destinations. The skills in research, argument, and written communication that the degree develops are also valued in journalism, law, and business.
