About this course

Politics combined with Spanish opens up both the intellectual discipline of political science and the language, culture, and societies of the Spanish-speaking world. Politics confronts the fundamental questions about how societies are governed, how power is distributed and contested, and what ideas underlie political action, from the functioning of the British political system to the most complex global challenges facing humanity. Spanish adds direct access to a language spoken by hundreds of millions of people across Europe, Latin America, Africa, and the United States, enriching your political analysis with a cultural and linguistic perspective that extends well beyond the English-speaking world.

At Dundee this four-year full-time MA degree takes you through politics alongside Spanish, with the breadth of a Scottish MA degree allowing you to study both subjects in the context of history, geography, languages, and other disciplines in the early years of the programme. As you advance to levels three and four you will be able to specialise in the areas that most interest you, developing genuine depth in both political science and your Spanish studies. A year abroad is embedded in the programme, giving you immersive language experience in a Spanish-speaking country and the opportunity to engage with political and cultural life there directly.

Dundee's research-informed teaching ensures that your political and linguistic education keeps pace with the changing world.

Graduates go on to careers in government, diplomacy, international business, journalism, the civil service, non-governmental organisations, law, and many other fields where the combination of political analysis and Spanish-language ability is an asset. The Spanish-speaking world is of growing economic and political significance, and graduates who can operate within it professionally are in demand across many sectors. Postgraduate study in politics, international relations, or Spanish is a natural next step for those wishing to develop specialist expertise.

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” good transport links make it ea…

A great decision
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy …
