Portuguese/Archaeology
Portuguese and archaeology is an unusual and intellectually rewarding combination that connects the study of one of the world's most widely spoken languages with the investigation of how human societies in the past shaped and were shaped by their material environments. Portuguese opens access to the cultures, literatures, and histories of Portugal, Brazil, and the Portuguese-speaking world across Africa, Asia, and beyond, developing your language skills alongside an understanding of lusophone history, society, and artistic production. Archaeology recovers the human past through excavation, survey, and the analysis of objects, sites, monuments, and landscapes, developing skills in fieldwork, material analysis, and historical interpretation.
The University of Glasgow offers this five-year full-time programme, which includes a sandwich year and work placement opportunities. You will develop Portuguese to a high level of proficiency, studying the language alongside literature and culture from across the lusophone world, while archaeology strands develop your understanding of field methods, theoretical frameworks, and the history of human society from earliest times. Work placement experience gives you the opportunity to apply your skills in a professional context, whether in heritage, cultural organisations, or Portuguese-speaking business environments, before you graduate.
