York St John University has a long and proud history of providing outstanding teacher training, and this three-year full-time Primary Education programme qualifies you to teach across all primary years while specialising in children aged three to seven. The course includes a foundation year for students who need to build their academic skills before entering the main programme. A year abroad provides an opportunity to experience early years education in a different national context, which can be profoundly illuminating both professionally and personally.

Throughout the programme, you will develop understanding of early childhood pedagogy, curriculum design, behaviour management, assessment, safeguarding, and inclusive practice. Substantial time in school placements runs alongside your academic studies, giving you the experience of genuine teaching practice under professional supervision before you qualify.

You will also develop the reflective practitioner skills that underpin sustained professional growth, learning to evaluate your own teaching, respond to pupil needs, and engage with the evidence base for effective early years practice. Graduates who achieve Qualified Teacher Status go on to work in early years settings, reception classes, and Key Stage 1 classrooms across maintained schools, academies, and independent settings.
