Professional Policing

Professional policing has emerged as a recognised degree-level discipline in the UK in response to the growing complexity of the police role and the demands that modern policing places on practitioners. Police officers today are required to exercise professional judgement in complex, ambiguous, and high-stakes situations, drawing on understanding of law, ethics, psychology, community relations, and criminal investigation. A degree in professional policing prepares you for this role by combining academic knowledge with practical training grounded in real policing environments.

At Wrexham University, you will have access to specialist practical facilities, including a Crime Scene House, Custody Desk, and a dedicated interview room, giving you hands-on experience in realistic policing environments from the outset of your studies. You will study criminal law, evidence and procedure, investigation, community policing, safeguarding, and the ethical and constitutional frameworks that govern police work. The programme develops the analytical, communicative, and decision-making capabilities that employers in policing and related fields value.

It runs over three years full-time, with a typical entry tariff of 120 points.

Graduates of professional policing degrees are well positioned for careers in the police service, including entry routes designed for degree-holders, as well as in related criminal justice roles such as the probation service, immigration enforcement, counter-terrorism, and border force. The skills developed on the programme, including critical thinking, investigative reasoning, and an understanding of law and ethics, are also transferable to careers in security, intelligence, private investigation, and public sector management. Postgraduate routes in criminology, criminal justice, or policing are available for those who want to develop their expertise further.
