About this course

Psychodynamic practice is rooted in one of the most influential intellectual traditions in the history of psychology and psychotherapy. Psychodynamic theory, developed from the foundational work of Freud and expanded by subsequent thinkers, holds that unconscious processes, early relationships, and the ways in which we defend against anxiety and distress have a profound influence on our emotional lives, our behaviour, and our relationships. Psychodynamic practice applies those ideas therapeutically, developing the relational and interpretive skills needed to support people in understanding and changing patterns that are causing them difficulty.

At the University of Essex, this three-year, full-time programme develops your understanding of child, adolescent, and adult development, alongside the emotional and psychological factors that influence behaviour and wellbeing in education, health, and social care settings. You will engage with psychodynamic theory in depth, developing both the intellectual framework to understand its claims and the practical and reflective skills to apply it in helping contexts. The programme asks you to develop your capacity for careful listening, empathic understanding, and the ability to hold and contain the emotional experiences of others, which are central to all forms of psychodynamic work.

Graduates go on to careers in counselling, psychotherapy, mental health support, social care, education, and the voluntary sector, working with children, young people, and adults in a range of settings. Many pursue further professional training to qualify as psychodynamic counsellors or psychotherapists through accredited postgraduate routes, and some progress towards registration with professional bodies. The reflective and relational skills the degree develops are also valued in roles in management, HR, healthcare, and community work, where an understanding of unconscious processes and human relationships makes a practical difference.

I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” the city …
