Psychological Science of Sport & Exercise
The psychological science of sport and exercise draws on the methods and theories of psychology to understand how mental processes influence physical performance and how engagement with sport and exercise affects psychological wellbeing. It is a discipline that operates across two related but distinct domains: sport psychology, which focuses on how psychological factors affect athletic performance, coaching relationships, and the competitive environment, and exercise psychology, which examines how people adopt, sustain, and benefit from physical activity across the lifespan. Both domains are grounded in evidence and require careful application of psychological science to real human contexts.
At Northampton this part-time programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you structured professional experience alongside your academic development. You will study the core psychological science that underpins both sport and exercise applications, covering areas such as motivation, stress and coping, imagery, concentration, and the social and environmental factors that shape physical activity behaviour. You will also develop the applied skills needed to work effectively with athletes, coaches, and general populations, including how to conduct psychological assessments, design interventions, and communicate findings clearly to different audiences.
The programme provides a pathway towards careers in both sport psychology and exercise psychology, areas where qualified practitioners are in growing demand.
Graduates find careers in performance and coaching environments including professional and amateur sport, physical education, sports development, and elite athlete support. On the exercise side, roles in health promotion, clinical exercise settings, leisure and fitness, and public health initiatives draw on the skills the programme develops. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study, including master's degrees or doctoral programmes that lead towards chartered status as a Sport and Exercise Psychologist through the British Psychological Society, or qualifications in coaching psychology, health psychology, or physical activity promotion.
