Psychology and Theological Studies

Psychology and Theological Studies is a degree that brings together two disciplines concerned, from very different perspectives, with the deepest questions about human beings: what we experience, how we behave, and what it means to live a human life. Psychology approaches these questions scientifically, investigating perception, cognition, motivation, emotion, development, and behaviour through controlled research and empirical analysis. Theological Studies approaches related questions through the lens of religious tradition and philosophical inquiry, examining what the world's great faiths have understood about human nature, meaning, suffering, and the good life.

At the University of St Andrews, you will be introduced to a broad range of areas studied by psychologists, grounded in both the theoretical foundations of contemporary psychology and its modern developments, with emphasis on practical classes and research techniques from the outset. The Theological Studies component provides a rigorous engagement with religious thought and tradition, examining what theological frameworks have to say about the human condition and how those frameworks can be studied critically and comparatively. The degree runs over four years on a full-time basis and includes a year abroad, extending your academic experience internationally.

Graduates of this unusual combination develop an exceptionally broad understanding of human experience, drawing on both scientific and humanistic traditions. Careers in counselling and psychotherapy (requiring further postgraduate training), chaplaincy, social work, research, education, journalism, the civil service, and faith-based organisations are all natural directions.
