Psychology

Psychology is the scientific discipline that examines how people think, feel, behave and interact with each other and with the environments they inhabit. It draws on experimental methods, statistical analysis and theoretical frameworks to address questions ranging from the neural mechanisms of perception to the social dynamics of group behaviour, and from the development of children's minds to the treatment of mental health difficulties. At Bangor University this programme, which includes a foundation year and a sandwich year, develops your understanding of the major areas of psychology within a research-active department with particular strengths in neuroimaging and cognitive neuroscience.

The foundation year provides a structured and supported entry into degree-level psychology, building the scientific and quantitative foundations needed before the main programme begins. Across the degree you will study social, developmental, cognitive and biological psychology alongside abnormal psychology and the clinical applications of psychological knowledge. Research methods and statistics are central throughout, giving you the rigour to engage critically with evidence and to conduct your own empirical research.

A sandwich year and work placements provide professional experience in psychology-related settings, and a year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to engage with psychological research and education in a different country.

Graduates of BPS-accredited psychology degrees hold the Graduate Basis for Chartership, which is the foundation for professional training in clinical, educational, forensic, health, occupational and sports psychology. Many graduates go on to postgraduate professional training or research, while others move into careers in HR, education, healthcare, social research, market research, the civil service, communications and a wide range of other roles where psychological understanding of people is valuable. Bangor's research strengths in neuropsychology and cognitive science also make it a strong base for those interested in research careers in these specific areas.
