Child development psychology brings together the scientific study of how children grow, learn, and change from infancy through adolescence. It is a sub-discipline within psychology that draws on developmental theory, cognitive science, social psychology, and neuroscience to understand how children's minds, personalities, and social capacities develop, and how different biological, environmental, and relational factors shape that development. Understanding child development is essential for clinical work with children and families, for educational practice, for safeguarding, and for the design of early intervention services.

The part-time Psychology (Child Development) programme at London South Bank University is BPS-accredited, providing a strong foundation in the core areas of psychology alongside a specific focus on child development. Studying part time makes the programme accessible to students who need flexibility, and it is well suited to those who are already working in education, health, social care, or other roles with children and families. You will study the core psychology curriculum, covering mental, emotional, and psychological processes with an emphasis on applying scientific theory and research skills with empathy and care, before specialising in child development topics that examine cognitive, language, social, and emotional growth across the childhood years.

Graduates from psychology programmes with a child development focus pursue careers in clinical child psychology (following further training), educational psychology, early years education, family support services, health visiting, child protection, and research. The BPS accreditation supports progression to postgraduate psychology training and eventual registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.
