At Roehampton University, this three-year full-time programme equips you with clinical and counselling skills alongside a strong grounding in psychological science. A sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities are built into the degree, giving you direct professional experience in clinical or mental health settings from an early stage. You will develop skills in therapeutic communication, reflective practice, and the application of psychological knowledge to real mental health challenges.

The programme combines academic rigour with an emphasis on professional development, helping you build the competencies valued across clinical, counselling, and support roles. You will study psychological science including cognition, development, social psychology, abnormal psychology, and research methods, alongside the applied clinical content that gives this specialism its distinctive character.

You will develop confidence in working with people experiencing mental health difficulties, build reflective and professional practice habits, and develop the research and analytical skills that underpin evidence-based clinical work.

Graduates typically pursue further professional training in clinical or counselling psychology, mental health nursing, counselling, or social work. The British Psychological Society Graduate Basis for Chartership, which an accredited psychology degree provides, is the foundation for the professional training route to qualification as a psychologist. Other graduates move into support, welfare, research, and healthcare management roles.

Postgraduate study in clinical or counselling psychology is the route to practitioner qualification.
