About this course

Psychology with a focus on Cognition and Neuroscience sits at the frontier of our understanding of the mind and brain. Cognitive psychology investigates the mental processes that underlie perception, attention, memory, language, and reasoning, asking how information is represented and processed in the mind. Neuroscience provides the biological substrate, examining the neural mechanisms through which these processes are implemented in the brain.

Together they address some of the deepest questions in science: how does physical activity in the brain give rise to thought, perception, and consciousness?

At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year full-time programme covers the core areas of psychology while giving particular depth to cognitive and neuroscientific approaches. You will study the experimental methods of cognitive psychology, including reaction time studies, eye-tracking, and neuroimaging techniques, alongside the biological basis of behaviour, neural anatomy, and the neuroscience of memory, emotion, and decision-making. The programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society, providing the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership that is essential for those pursuing a professional psychology career.

Cognition and Neuroscience graduates are well placed for a range of careers in science and beyond. Academic research in cognitive science, neuroscience, and psychology is a common aspiration, typically requiring postgraduate study at Masters or PhD level. Clinical psychology, neuropsychology, and occupational health psychology are professional practice routes that require further postgraduate training.

Roles in user experience research, human factors engineering, and artificial intelligence development increasingly draw on cognitive science expertise. Pharmaceutical and healthcare companies employ people with neuroscience backgrounds in drug development, clinical trial support, and medical communications. The analytical skills developed transfer broadly across science and technology sectors.

Highly recommend
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if you share …

A great decision
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable…
