Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, examining how we perceive, think, feel, learn, develop, and relate to others. Sport and exercise psychology applies those foundations to the specific contexts of athletic performance, physical activity, and exercise behaviour, asking how mental processes influence sporting achievement, how psychological skills can be developed and applied, what motivates people to exercise, and how physical activity benefits psychological health. It is a growing field with both scientific rigour and direct practical application across elite sport, fitness, healthcare, and education.

At Lincoln you will study this three-year full-time programme, developing your grounding in general psychology alongside specialist knowledge of sport and exercise psychology. You will cover the core areas of psychology required for Graduate Basis for Chartership with the British Psychological Society, including cognitive, developmental, social, biological, and individual differences psychology, alongside the specific theories and applications relevant to sport and exercise: motivation, anxiety, confidence, goal-setting, team dynamics, exercise adherence, and the psychology of injury and rehabilitation. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you professional experience in sport, exercise, or psychology settings alongside your academic study.

Graduates of psychology with a sport and exercise specialism pursue careers as sport and exercise psychologists, performance coaches, exercise referral specialists, and researchers. Entry to applied sport and exercise psychology practice typically requires further accredited postgraduate training and registration with relevant professional bodies. The broader psychology qualification also opens pathways into clinical, educational, occupational, and health psychology with appropriate postgraduate study.

Many graduates work in sport science support roles, fitness and health promotion, or education, where the combination of psychological knowledge and sport-specific expertise is directly applicable.
