Psychology is the scientific study of mind, behaviour, and the neural and social processes that shape them. It addresses questions that are both academically rigorous and deeply relevant to everyday life: how do we perceive and attend to the world around us, how does memory work and why does it fail, what drives our decisions, how do social relationships and cultural contexts shape who we are, and what happens when mental or neurological processes go wrong? The discipline draws on biology, philosophy, statistics, and social science to build an evidence-based understanding of human and animal psychology.

At Swansea University, this three-year, full-time degree develops your understanding of the psychological and neuroscientific processes that underpin thinking, reasoning, memory, and language, alongside social, developmental, and clinical dimensions of the field. You will engage with the effects of brain injury on cognition and behaviour, and explore evidence-based approaches to improving health-related behaviour. The programme combines theoretical depth with research methods training, developing your ability to design studies, analyse data, and interpret findings critically.

Psychology graduates enter an exceptionally wide range of careers. For those who wish to become a practising psychologist in a clinical, educational, forensic, or occupational specialism, further postgraduate training is required. However, the analytical and research skills that psychology develops are valued across many professional fields, including human resources, marketing, user experience design, social work, health promotion, the civil service, and management consultancy.

Teaching, journalism, and the voluntary sector are also common destinations. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in psychology or related disciplines, including clinical psychology, neuroscience, and health psychology.
