Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of mind, behaviour and experience, examining how people think, feel, perceive, remember, learn, develop and interact with each other and with their social and physical environments. It is a discipline with strong empirical foundations, requiring careful experimental design, statistical analysis and critical engagement with evidence alongside the theoretical frameworks that help us interpret what the data shows. At the University of Warwick this three-year programme has a strong practical focus, giving you a scientific understanding of all aspects of human behaviour alongside the research skills that psychological inquiry demands.

You will study the major areas of psychology including social, developmental, cognitive, biological and abnormal psychology, developing breadth of knowledge across the discipline as well as the ability to engage in depth with the research literature in each area. Statistical methods and research design are central to the programme, and you will carry out your own empirical research before you graduate. A sandwich year provides a substantial period of professional experience in a psychology-related setting, and work placements and a year abroad are also built in, giving you multiple opportunities to develop your professional capability and your international perspective.

Graduates of psychology from a British Psychological Society-accredited programme have the Graduate Basis for Chartership, which is the starting point for professional training in clinical, educational, forensic, health, occupational and other applied branches of psychology. Many graduates go on to postgraduate professional training or research, while others enter careers in human resources, market research, healthcare management, education, social work, communications, the civil service or management roles, where the understanding of human behaviour and motivation that psychology develops is highly relevant.
