About this course

Psychology is the scientific study of mind, brain, and behaviour, seeking to understand how and why people think, feel, perceive, remember, and act the way they do. It is a discipline that draws on biology, philosophy, sociology, and statistics to investigate everything from the neural mechanisms underlying memory and emotion to the social dynamics that shape group behaviour and the factors that influence wellbeing, mental health, and human relationships. Psychology has both a rigorous scientific tradition and a profound practical relevance, touching on virtually every aspect of individual and social life.

At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year, full-time degree is designed for students who are genuinely curious about what makes people tick. You will study core areas of the discipline, including cognitive psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, biological psychology, and research methods, developing both theoretical understanding and the empirical skills to design and conduct scientific investigations. A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to study in a different academic and cultural environment.

Aberdeen's psychology department has a strong research profile, and the programme benefits from that scholarly environment. The typical entry tariff of 152 points reflects strong academic expectations for a science-based degree.

Psychology graduates enter an exceptionally broad range of careers. For those who wish to practise as a psychologist, further postgraduate training is required in specialisations such as clinical, educational, forensic, health, or occupational psychology. Many graduates, however, apply their knowledge and skills in other fields: human resources, marketing and consumer research, user experience design, social work, education, journalism, public health, and management consulting all value the ability to understand human behaviour and to design and interpret evidence-based research.

The research methods training that psychology provides is a genuine asset in any field where data and evidence matter.

Good but not perfect
Overall a solid programme but worth going in with open eyes. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” local co…

Would do it again
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” good transport…
