Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, examining how we perceive, think, feel, remember, learn and relate to others, and investigating the biological, developmental, social and cultural processes that shape human experience. It sits at the boundary of natural science and social science, using rigorous empirical methods to ask questions that have direct relevance to mental health, education, work, relationships, justice, and the full range of human endeavour. At the University of Derby this three-year programme includes a foundation year option for students who need additional preparation before the main curriculum, and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, providing extensive professional and international experience alongside academic study. The programme is designed to develop the next generation of psychologists, giving you a broad and detailed knowledge of psychological theory across cognitive, biological, developmental, social and clinical areas, alongside research skills in both quantitative and qualitative methods. You will apply psychological knowledge to real-world issues, developing the ability to think analytically about human behaviour and to communicate your understanding clearly.

Graduates of psychology go on to a wide range of careers. With further postgraduate training, the most direct routes into applied psychological practice include clinical psychology, educational psychology, occupational psychology, health psychology, forensic psychology, and counselling. Without further professional training, psychology graduates enter careers in human resources, organisational development, market research, social care, education, the civil service, healthcare administration, journalism, and many other fields where understanding human behaviour and working effectively with people is valued.

Postgraduate study in psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, social work, or counselling is a common next step, and the British Psychological Society provides the professional framework for those seeking accreditation to practise.
