Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, encompassing everything from the neural mechanisms of perception to the social dynamics that shape how groups form and function. Its range is genuinely extraordinary, drawing on biology, statistics, philosophy and social theory to understand how people think, feel, develop and act. The discipline has practical applications in clinical treatment, educational practice, organisational management and the design of public health interventions, but it is also intellectually rewarding in its own right as an attempt to understand the most complex system we know.

At the University of St Andrews, the four-year MA programme introduces you to a broad range of areas studied by psychologists, including perception, cognition, motivation and behaviour, and grounds you in the theoretical foundations and modern developments of contemporary psychology. Practical classes and research techniques are emphasised from the outset, so you develop the skills to design studies, collect and analyse data, and draw evidence-based conclusions, capacities that are central to any serious engagement with the discipline. Psychology graduates are sought after across a wide range of careers, in part because the discipline develops strong analytical, quantitative and interpersonal skills that transfer well beyond psychology itself. Graduates who hold a degree accredited by the British Psychological Society gain the academic foundation for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, which is the first step towards professional registration as a psychologist. Postgraduate research and doctoral training are also well-established routes for those who wish to contribute to the scientific development of the discipline.
