Psychology with Counselling

Psychology with counselling brings together two disciplines that are deeply interconnected in practice. Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, examining how people think, feel, perceive, learn, and interact through rigorous experimental and research methods. Counselling applies psychological understanding in a therapeutic context, using structured conversations and evidence-based approaches to support people through personal difficulties, mental health challenges, and life transitions.

At Coventry University this three-year full-time programme explores the human mind through the lens of psychology while integrating counselling theories and techniques that have direct application to helping others. You will develop a scientific understanding of psychological processes alongside the interpersonal skills, ethical awareness, and reflective capacity that counselling practice requires. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you a combination of professional experience and international academic exposure that enriches both your psychological understanding and your practical capability.

Graduates from psychology with counselling programmes are well placed for a range of careers in mental health services, counselling and psychotherapy, social care, human resources, education, community support, and youth work. The British Psychological Society graduate basis for membership, where achieved, is a gateway to further training in applied psychology. Many graduates go on to postgraduate training in counselling, psychotherapy, clinical psychology, or educational psychology, which are the routes into registered professional practice.
