Psychology with Counselling

Psychology and counselling together address two complementary dimensions of human wellbeing: the scientific study of how the mind and behaviour work, and the relational and therapeutic practice of supporting people through difficulty. Psychology draws on empirical research to understand cognition, emotion, development, social behaviour, and mental health. Counselling develops the skills, self-awareness, and ethical understanding needed to work with people in a therapeutic relationship.

At the University of Sunderland, this three-year full-time programme examines the brain, perception, memory, language, development, personality, and social psychology alongside training in counselling theory, skills, and practice. You will learn how to listen effectively, how to build therapeutic relationships, and how to apply different counselling approaches to a range of client needs and contexts. Throughout the degree, you will also develop your understanding of yourself, since effective counselling practice requires a high degree of self-awareness and the ability to reflect honestly on your own responses and assumptions.
