Psychology with Criminology

Psychology with Criminology brings together two disciplines that are both individually compelling and powerfully complementary when studied in combination. Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour, examining how people think, feel, perceive, learn and make decisions, and how individual and social factors interact to shape human experience. Criminology examines what behaviour is defined as criminal, why crime occurs and how institutions respond to it.

The intersection of the two disciplines is particularly important in understanding offending behaviour, victimology, the reliability of witness testimony, risk assessment and the psychological dimensions of criminal justice practice.

At Middlesex University, this full-time three-year programme includes an optional foundation year for students who need additional scientific preparation before progressing to the main degree. You will study the core areas of psychological science alongside key criminological frameworks, developing research skills and critical thinking alongside subject knowledge in both disciplines. The programme is designed with an orientation towards the criminal justice system, making it well-suited for students who want to understand the psychological aspects of legal proceedings, offending behaviour and criminal investigation.

Graduates from Psychology with Criminology programmes go on to careers in the criminal justice system, probation services, youth offending teams, prison psychology, victim support, social work, community rehabilitation and mental health services. The psychology component of the degree also opens doors in clinical and counselling psychology training, human resources, education, market research and health services. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in forensic psychology, clinical psychology or criminology, and a master's or doctoral qualification is typically required for registration as a practitioner psychologist with the relevant professional bodies.
