Psychology With Forensic Perspectives

Forensic psychology applies psychological science to questions that arise in legal and criminal justice contexts. It examines why people commit offences, how the justice system processes and responds to criminal behaviour, how psychological evidence is gathered and evaluated in legal proceedings, and what effective rehabilitation looks like. The field sits at the intersection of clinical psychology, criminology, and law, drawing on research into cognition, emotion, personality, and social influence to understand behaviour in some of the most demanding human situations.

At Edge Hill University, this three-year full-time programme grounds you in core psychological science while developing a focused understanding of forensic and legal contexts. You will study the psychological factors that influence criminal behaviour, the assessment and treatment of offenders, the psychology of witnesses and juries, and the way psychological knowledge is applied in courts, prisons, and other forensic settings. The programme develops your research and analytical skills alongside your understanding of the practical and ethical challenges that arise when psychology intersects with the law.

A sandwich year and year abroad are available, as are work placement opportunities, allowing you to gain hands-on experience in relevant professional environments during your studies.

Graduates go on to careers in the criminal justice system, including probation, the prison service, youth offending teams, and victim support services. Many pursue postgraduate training to become chartered forensic psychologists, which typically involves a master's degree and supervised practice. Careers in social work, counselling, policing, and policy are also common, and the analytical and interpersonal skills the degree develops are valued across the public and voluntary sectors.
