Psychology with Forensic Psychology

Psychology with forensic psychology applies the scientific study of the mind and behaviour to questions of crime, the legal system and the contexts in which psychological understanding most directly affects how society responds to harm. Forensic psychology draws on clinical, developmental, social and cognitive psychology to address questions including why people offend, how decisions are made under pressure, how victims respond to trauma, what factors in a person's history and circumstances are associated with reoffending risk, and what interventions actually work in reducing harm.

At the University of Kent you will study for three years full-time, developing the core scientific competencies of psychology alongside a specialist focus on forensic applications. The programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society, providing Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, which is the foundation for those who wish to pursue professional psychology qualifications. You will build skills in research design, statistical analysis, the critical evaluation of evidence and the ability to communicate psychological ideas with accuracy and care, alongside direct engagement with the psychological dimensions of criminal behaviour, the justice system, victim experience and rehabilitation.

Graduates work in criminal justice settings including prisons, probation, youth offending teams, police liaison roles, victim support organisations, mental health services within justice contexts, and research organisations. The BPS accreditation means graduates can pursue the further training required for chartership as a forensic psychologist, which involves supervised practice and postgraduate study. Many graduates also move into social work, mental health support, counselling, community safety, policy research and a range of public sector roles where understanding the psychology of offending and victimisation is directly relevant to the work.
