Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, exploring how people think, feel, perceive, remember, develop, and relate to one another. It draws on biology, philosophy, and the social sciences to build a rigorous account of what makes us human, and it is a discipline with genuine relevance to health, education, work, and everyday life.

At the University of Northampton you will cover the core areas of psychology, including cognitive processes such as memory and attention, biological bases of behaviour, social influences, developmental psychology across the lifespan, and individual differences. You will also learn how psychological research is designed, conducted, and critically evaluated, developing statistical and qualitative skills that are central to the discipline. These research methods are not simply technical requirements but a way of thinking carefully about evidence and the limits of what we can claim to know.

This programme is four years in total and includes a foundation year at the start. The foundation year is designed to build your academic skills and ensure you have a solid grounding in the sciences and study techniques needed to succeed at degree level. It makes the full psychology degree accessible to students who have the motivation and interest but have not followed a traditional pre-university route, or who simply benefit from a more gradual transition into higher education.

Psychology graduates are among the most versatile in the graduate labour market. Many go into careers in mental health services, counselling, and clinical practice, though typically with additional postgraduate training. Others work in human resources, marketing, education, social care, law, and business, where understanding human behaviour is a genuine professional asset.

Further study options include master's degrees and doctorates in clinical, educational, occupational, forensic, or research psychology.
