Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, encompassing everything from the neural basis of perception to the social dynamics of group decision-making. It is an empirical discipline: psychologists form hypotheses, design studies, collect data and evaluate evidence with the same rigour that characterises any natural science. At the same time, its subject matter, human and animal thought, feeling and action, connects it to some of the most profound questions about what it means to be conscious, to be social, and to act in the world.

At Aberystwyth University, this four-year programme, which includes an integrated foundation year providing supported entry before the main degree, is accredited by the British Psychological Society, as the university notes. Accreditation means the degree meets the standards required for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, which is the first formal step toward becoming a Chartered Psychologist. The programme is designed to develop conceptual and theoretical knowledge for solving problems in real-world scenarios, combining strong scientific foundations with an applied orientation.

You will study cognitive, social, biological, developmental and personality psychology, alongside research methods and statistics, which receive serious and sustained attention throughout because quantitative literacy is fundamental to psychological science.

The degree develops critical thinking, evidence-based reasoning, quantitative analysis and the ability to understand and apply psychological knowledge in a wide range of human contexts. These skills are valued across many professional fields.

Graduates go on to careers in healthcare, education, human resources, marketing, research, the civil service, social work, counselling and many other fields. Those who want to practise as psychologists in regulated areas such as clinical, educational or forensic psychology will need to complete further postgraduate professional training. Further study in psychology or a related area is a well-established route.
