About this course

Quantity surveying and commercial management sits at the financial and contractual core of the construction industry, concerned with managing costs, value, and risk across the full lifecycle of a project. Quantity surveyors ensure that construction projects are financially viable, competitively priced, and commercially controlled from initial feasibility through design, procurement, construction, and final account. Commercial managers bring a broader strategic lens, overseeing the business performance of contractors and consultants and negotiating the contracts that govern how construction is delivered.

Both roles demand numeracy, commercial awareness, contractual knowledge, and the ability to communicate with confidence across a wide range of stakeholders.

At Coventry you will study this three-year full-time programme, developing skills that are directly relevant to careers in construction, civil engineering, and utilities. The programme covers cost planning and estimating, procurement and tendering, contract law, financial management, risk and value management, and the practical skills of measurement and documentation. It includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you extensive professional and international experience alongside your academic study.

That combination of technical training and real-world exposure is designed to produce graduates who are ready to contribute quickly in industry.

Graduates work in consultancies, contracting organisations, client-side project teams, and development companies across a wide range of construction markets. Roles include quantity surveyor, commercial manager, cost consultant, project manager, and employer's agent. The profession is regulated in the UK and internationally by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and many graduates go on to complete the Assessment of Professional Competence to achieve chartered status.

Postgraduate study in quantity surveying, project management, or construction economics is also available for those who wish to deepen their expertise.

The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” the cit…
