About this course

Robotic and mechatronic engineering sits at the intersection of mechanical engineering, electronics, software engineering and intelligent control systems, and it is producing some of the most transformative technologies of the present era. Robots that can sense their environment, plan actions and execute tasks with precision are moving rapidly out of controlled industrial settings into healthcare, agriculture, logistics, domestic life and public spaces, while mechatronic systems sit inside modern vehicles, medical devices, consumer electronics and manufacturing equipment. Engineers who can design and build these integrated systems are among the most in-demand graduates in the technology sector.

At the University of Sussex this programme includes a foundation year, providing a structured pathway for students developing the scientific and mathematical background needed for degree-level engineering study. The programme also includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work-placement experience, which together give you a substantial combination of professional and international experience alongside your academic studies. The full programme runs over three years of the degree itself with the additional structural features extending the total duration.

You will study mechanical engineering, electronics, programming, control theory, artificial intelligence for robotics, sensors and actuators, and the design and testing of integrated mechatronic systems.

You will develop the ability to move fluently between mechanical, electrical and software domains, to design and build real robotic and mechatronic systems, and to work effectively in the kind of multi-disciplinary engineering teams that produce complex integrated products.

Graduates from robotic and mechatronic engineering programmes move into careers in robotics design and development, automation engineering, mechatronic systems engineering, autonomous vehicle development, aerospace, medical device engineering and advanced manufacturing. Postgraduate study in robotics, AI or a related engineering field is also a well-established route for those seeking specialist or research careers.
