Russian Studies

Russian studies offers one of the most richly layered programmes in the humanities, combining advanced language learning with deep engagement with a culture that has shaped world history, literature, music and politics in ways that continue to resonate today. Russia has produced some of the most significant literary works in the canon, from Tolstoy and Dostoevsky to Chekhov and Bulgakov, and its twentieth-century history, from revolution through the Soviet period to the present, raises fundamental questions about power, ideology, society and human resilience that reward sustained scholarly attention.

At the University of Manchester, you will develop genuine fluency in Russian alongside a sophisticated understanding of the country's culture, society, history, politics and literature. The degree runs over four years with a sandwich year, during which you have the opportunity to spend time in a professional placement environment, and work placements are also available as part of the programme, giving you direct professional experience. You will study Russian language at an advanced level, developing reading, writing, speaking and listening skills across a range of registers.

Alongside language work you will explore Russian literature and film, the history of the Soviet Union, contemporary Russian politics and society, and the intercultural dimensions of communicating across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
