Russian with an East European Language

Russian is a language of enormous historical and cultural significance, spoken by over 150 million people and central to one of the world's great literary and artistic traditions, from Dostoevsky and Tolstoy to Chekhov and Akhmatova. Combining it with an East European language opens a wider regional perspective, allowing you to engage with the languages, histories, and cultures of countries including Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine, and others, whose twentieth-century experiences have been among the most dramatic of any on Earth. Together, these languages give you access to a vast and complex part of the world.

University College London's four-year full-time programme in Russian with an East European language is taught in one of the UK's leading departments for Slavonic and East European studies. You will develop high-level communicative competence in both languages, studying them from the level appropriate to your starting point and progressing to advanced reading, writing, and conversation. You will engage with literature, history, film, and contemporary culture in both languages, examining the political and cultural forces that have shaped these societies and their relationship with each other and with Western Europe.

Graduates in Russian with an East European language go on to work in diplomacy, international relations, journalism, intelligence, translation and interpreting, the civil service, academia, NGOs, and business roles across the region. At a time of heightened geopolitical attention to Eastern Europe and Russia, the demand for graduates with genuine linguistic and cultural expertise in this area is considerable. Many continue to postgraduate study in area studies, history, or international relations, and some pursue careers in security, policy, or cultural organisations with a regional focus.
