Combining Scottish history with Spanish offers an unusual and genuinely rewarding intellectual pairing. Scottish history draws on a rich archive of political transformation, religious conflict, imperial entanglement and cultural identity, tracing the story of a small nation whose influence on global affairs has been disproportionate to its size. Spanish, meanwhile, opens a world language spoken by hundreds of millions of people across Europe and Latin America, and with it access to an enormous range of literary, political and cultural traditions.

Together, the two subjects encourage you to think comparatively, to read primary sources critically and to understand how historical context shapes meaning in language and text.

This five-year full-time programme at the University of Glasgow carries a typical entry tariff of 200 UCAS points and incorporates a placement year and a work placement opportunity. You will study Scottish history in depth, from the medieval period through the Reformation, the Union with England, the Enlightenment and into the modern era. On the Spanish side, Glasgow's staff cover a wide range of topics, and you will have the opportunity to practise with native speakers from different parts of the Spanish-speaking world, which strengthens your command of regional variation and cultural nuance.

The combination of archival historical work and active language use makes for a programme that builds both scholarly rigour and practical communication skills.

Graduates go on to careers in education, heritage and museum work, public administration, broadcasting, journalism, international business and translation. The language component makes you attractive to employers in both UK and international markets, and the historical training equips you for roles that require research, analysis and clear writing. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in history, Hispanic studies or related fields, and a number move into academic careers or public history roles.
