Scottish History with Bible and Culture
Scottish history is an exceptionally rich field of study, encompassing the formation of a distinct national identity, the complexities of union and independence across centuries, and Scotland's contributions to the intellectual, cultural, and political life of the modern world. The study of the Bible and culture adds a different but complementary dimension, examining how one of the most influential texts in human history has shaped literature, art, ethics, and society across time and across traditions. Together, the two subjects develop your capacity for historical analysis, textual interpretation, and cultural understanding in ways that neither discipline achieves alone.
At the University of St Andrews, this four-year programme allows you to pursue both subjects with academic seriousness and depth. In Scottish history, you will engage with primary sources and secondary scholarship spanning the medieval, early modern, and modern periods, developing the research and interpretive skills that professional historical work demands. In Bible and culture, you will examine the reception, translation, and influence of biblical texts across different cultural and historical contexts, drawing on literary, historical, and theological approaches.
A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study at an international partner institution and bring new perspectives back to both disciplines.
The combination of skills these subjects develop, including archival research, close reading, critical analysis, and the ability to interpret complex texts across cultural contexts, is valued in a wide range of careers. Graduates go on to work in heritage, museum and library services, education, journalism, broadcasting, publishing, the church and other faith organisations, and the civil and diplomatic service. Many go on to postgraduate study in history, theology, religious studies, or cultural studies, pursuing academic careers or specialist roles in public and cultural life.
