Social Care, Justice and Recovery

Social care, justice and recovery sits at the intersection of some of the most important and challenging areas of public life, concerned with supporting individuals and communities affected by inequality, trauma, mental ill health, substance use, criminal justice processes and a wide range of welfare needs. It is a discipline grounded in an understanding that the difficulties people face are rarely simple or isolated, and that effective support requires professionals who can work across organisational boundaries, think systemically and bring both practical skills and genuine compassion to complex situations.

At Leeds Beckett University, this three-year full-time degree was developed in consultation with welfare agencies, ensuring that its content reflects the realities of contemporary practice. You will study social policy, psychology, criminology, social work theory and community development, exploring how statutory services, voluntary organisations and community groups respond to need across the life course. Because the programme includes a year abroad, you will also have the opportunity to study in another country, gaining an international perspective on welfare systems and the different ways societies organise care and justice.

The degree builds your ability to analyse policy frameworks critically, to understand the experience of people using services, and to work ethically in environments where safeguarding, professional boundaries and equitable practice are paramount.

You will develop skills in communication, assessment, report writing, teamwork and reflective practice, all of which are central to professional roles in this field. The breadth of the curriculum means you encounter perspectives from sociology, psychology, law and public health, giving you a genuinely multidisciplinary foundation.

Graduates are well prepared for roles in social care, probation, youth work, mental health services, housing support, community development and voluntary sector organisations. Many go on to further professional qualifications, including social work, counselling or criminal justice training. The degree also provides a strong platform for postgraduate study in social policy, criminology, public health or related fields.
