Social Care, Justice and Recovery

Social care, justice and recovery is concerned with supporting individuals and communities through some of the most challenging circumstances that human beings face, from mental ill health and substance use to homelessness, trauma and involvement with the criminal justice system. It is a discipline that recognises the interconnectedness of these challenges and the inadequacy of narrow, siloed responses to them, preparing professionals who can work across organisational boundaries, think systemically and combine practical skill with genuine compassion.

At Leeds Beckett University, this part-time programme was developed in consultation with welfare agencies, ensuring that its content reflects the realities of contemporary practice in community and social care services, which have diversified significantly in recent decades. You will study social policy, psychology, criminology, social work theory and community development, exploring how statutory services, voluntary organisations and community groups respond to need across the life course. The part-time mode allows you to study while continuing to work in a relevant professional setting, which is common among students on this programme and which gives your academic learning immediate practical context.

A year abroad is part of the programme, providing the opportunity to study how other countries organise care and justice systems and to develop an international perspective on the questions the degree addresses.

The skills the degree develops, including assessment, communication, reflective practice, policy analysis and the ability to work ethically in complex and sometimes distressing situations, are central to effective practice in this field.

Graduates are well prepared for roles in social care, probation, youth work, mental health services, housing support, community development and voluntary sector organisations. Many go on to further professional qualifications in social work, counselling or criminal justice. Further study in social policy, criminology or public health is also a common route.
