Social Policy and Criminal Justice

Social policy and criminal justice together examine the structures that societies build to manage welfare, social need, and responses to crime. Social policy asks how governments and institutions address poverty, inequality, housing, health, education, and social care, while criminal justice studies the systems of policing, courts, sentencing, prisons, and rehabilitation through which society responds to offending. Together these disciplines develop a sharp analytical understanding of power, inequality, and the ways in which state institutions shape and are shaped by social conditions.

The University of Bedfordshire offers this programme on a part-time basis, designed to accommodate students who are working or have other commitments alongside their studies. You will explore the history and theory of social policy, the development of the welfare state, approaches to crime and punishment, criminological theory, the politics of criminal justice reform, and the relationship between marginalised communities and statutory services. The programme draws on both quantitative and qualitative research methods, developing your ability to engage critically with evidence, policy documents, and academic literature.

Throughout, you will be encouraged to connect theoretical frameworks to real policy debates and contemporary issues in social welfare and justice.

Graduates from social policy and criminal justice programmes go on to work in the probation service, youth justice, social work, housing, community development, local government, the voluntary sector, and policy roles across national and regional government.
