Social Work

Social work is a profession and an academic discipline concerned with improving the wellbeing of individuals, families and communities, protecting those who are most vulnerable, and challenging the social conditions that create disadvantage and harm. It draws on psychology, sociology, law, ethics and policy to equip practitioners with the knowledge and values needed to work with people in some of the most difficult circumstances they will face: abuse, neglect, poverty, mental illness, disability, addiction, and the challenges of childhood, ageing and family breakdown. It is a demanding profession and a profoundly important one.

At the University of Essex this three-year programme leads to a qualifying degree in social work that meets the requirements for registration with Social Work England, the regulatory body for the profession. You will study the legal frameworks, theories, and practice methods that underpin social work, developing a critical understanding of social justice, diversity, and the ethical responsibilities of the practitioner. Practice placements are a core component of the programme, placing you in real social work settings under the supervision of qualified practitioners.

You will work with people across the life course, developing the skills of assessment, relationship-based practice, risk management, and inter-agency collaboration that social work requires.

Qualified social workers are employed by local authority children's services and adult social care departments, health services, probation, housing, voluntary sector organisations, schools, and the independent sector. The profession offers genuine career progression, from practice to team leadership, management, and specialist roles in areas such as child protection, mental health social work, disability services, and practice education. Social work is a shortage profession in many parts of the UK, and the career offers secure employment with real social impact.

Postgraduate study and continuing professional development are expected throughout a social work career.
