Social work is one of the most directly consequential professions in public life. This three-year full-time programme at the University of Hull is approved by Social Work England, the regulatory body for the profession in England, meaning that successful graduates are eligible to register as qualified social workers. You will learn from registered social workers who bring current professional knowledge and direct practice experience into the classroom. Alongside academic study in social work theory, law, and sociology, you will complete extended placements in practice settings, which are a mandatory and substantial part of any approved social work programme.

These placements develop your professional skills in assessed, real-world environments and are essential preparation for your career. With a typical entry tariff of 136 points, the programme suits students who are motivated by a genuine commitment to social justice and public service.

Graduates qualify to register with Social Work England and can practise as social workers across children's services, adult social care, mental health, criminal justice, and healthcare settings. Local authorities are the largest employers, providing statutory child protection and adult care services. NHS trusts, hospices, mental health trusts, and community organisations also employ qualified social workers.

The independent and voluntary sectors offer further opportunities in specialist support services. With experience, social workers move into advanced practice, management, consultancy, and leadership roles within organisations. Postgraduate study in specialist areas of social work practice or in social policy is available for those who want to develop their professional expertise further.
