Social Work

Social work is a profession whose purpose is to support individuals, families, and communities to overcome disadvantage, crisis, and vulnerability, and to promote social justice in a world where structural inequalities produce unequal outcomes. Social workers work with children at risk of harm, with adults experiencing disability, mental illness, or poverty, with older people needing care and support, and with communities facing systemic challenges. The work is demanding, requires strong professional judgement, and carries real responsibility for the wellbeing and sometimes the safety of the people it serves.

At Bedfordshire you will study this three-year full-time programme, which leads to registration with Social Work England and qualification to practise as a social worker. The programme is designed to develop not only your knowledge of law, social policy, human development, and social work theory but also the values, communication skills, and reflective practice that effective social work demands. Practice placements run throughout the degree, giving you supervised experience in real social work settings across different service areas and client groups.

These placements are central to your training and ensure that your academic learning is continuously tested against the realities of professional practice.

Qualified social workers are in consistent demand across local authorities, NHS trusts, charities, and independent providers. Roles include children's social worker in child protection and looked-after children teams, adult social worker in mental health, learning disability, or older adults services, and community-based and systemic practice roles. With experience, social workers progress to senior practitioner, team manager, and advanced practitioner roles.

Many continue to postgraduate study or specialist qualification in areas such as practice education, approved mental health practice, or systemic family practice. Bedfordshire's programme has a strong record for graduate prospects.
