Social Work

Social Work is one of the most directly purposeful degrees you can study, preparing you to support people through some of the most difficult experiences of their lives: poverty, domestic abuse, mental ill-health, substance misuse, child protection, and the challenges facing older adults and those with disabilities. Social workers occupy a unique position, working at the boundary of individual lives and the systems, legal frameworks, and services designed to support them. The degree is both an academic qualification and a professional one, combining theory and practice throughout.

At the University of Northampton, this three-year full-time programme is approved by Social Work England, the regulatory body for the profession, and qualifies you to practise as a registered social worker on graduation. You will study human development across the lifespan, social policy and law, research methods, ethics, and the theoretical frameworks that underpin professional practice. Crucially, a substantial proportion of your time is spent on supervised practice placements in real social work settings, giving you direct experience with statutory and voluntary organisations across children's and adults' services.

Graduation opens the door to a profession in which demand for qualified practitioners consistently outstrips supply. Children's services, adult social care, mental health teams, probation, and the third sector all employ social workers in significant numbers. Local authorities are the largest employer, but the NHS, housing associations, schools, and international organisations also have social work roles.

The regulated qualification also gives you a foundation for specialist practice and management. Many social workers pursue postgraduate study to develop expertise in a particular area such as mental health, practice education, or systemic family therapy.
