Sociology and Politics

Sociology and politics together offer one of the most powerful combinations for understanding contemporary society. Sociology asks why social structures take the forms they do, how inequalities are produced and sustained, and what binds or divides communities. Politics asks how power is organised and contested, how decisions are made in democratic and non-democratic systems, and what the state owes its citizens.

Studied together, the two disciplines illuminate each other: political life cannot be understood without sociological context, and social change cannot be understood without attention to power.

This four-year programme at the University of the Highlands and Islands is designed to be completed flexibly, allowing you to take fewer course units per week than a conventional full-time degree while maintaining academic depth across both disciplines. You will engage with major sociological theories and political frameworks, develop your skills in social research both quantitative and qualitative, and build an understanding of the institutions, movements, and structures that shape collective life in the contemporary world. The Highlands and Islands context gives the programme a distinctive regional dimension, connected to questions of rural society, devolution, land rights, and community that are particularly vivid in that part of Scotland.

Graduates of sociology and politics programmes go on to careers in the civil service, local and national government, policy research, journalism, the voluntary and charitable sector, community development, social research, and education. The combination of critical thinking, research skills, and understanding of social and political institutions makes graduates attractive to employers across many sectors. Postgraduate study in social policy, sociology, political science, public administration, or social research methods is a well-trodden route for those who want to deepen their expertise or pursue academic research.
