Sociology and Theology

Sociology and theology is a combination that brings together two disciplines deeply concerned with how human beings make sense of their existence in community. Sociology examines the structures, institutions, and cultural forces that shape social life, asking questions about inequality, power, belonging, and change. Theology examines the beliefs, practices, texts, and traditions through which human beings have wrestled with questions of meaning, ethics, and transcendence across cultures and throughout history.

Together they offer a richly layered perspective on what holds communities together and what divides them, and on the role of religion in social life past and present.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands this four-year full-time programme draws on an institution deeply embedded in a region with its own distinctive religious history, particularly in relation to Highland Presbyterianism, Gaelic Christianity, and the complex relationship between religion and community identity in the north of Scotland. You will study sociological theory and research methods alongside theology, biblical studies, and the history and ethics of religious traditions. The combination cultivates critical thinking, sensitivity to cultural difference, and the ability to engage analytically with lived human experience.

You will develop research skills, critical writing, the ability to engage with primary religious and sociological texts, and a broad awareness of the social dimensions of religious belief and practice.

Graduates pursue careers in education, social work, community development, church ministry, charity work, healthcare chaplaincy, social research, and the public sector. Postgraduate study in theology, sociology, social policy, or religious studies is a natural continuation.
