Sociology

Sociology is the systematic study of social life, examining the processes, structures, and forces that shape how individuals live, how groups cohere and conflict, and how societies change over time. It is a discipline that refuses to take the social world for granted, asking instead how the institutions, cultures, and inequalities that organise our lives came to be, how they are maintained, and how they might be different. Sociologists study everything from the dynamics of family and education to the workings of markets, states, religion, race, gender, and global inequality, using empirical research and theoretical analysis to make the familiar strange and the complex intelligible.

At Birkbeck College, this part-time programme is designed for students who are studying alongside work and other commitments, offering evening and weekend teaching that makes a rigorous BA in Sociology accessible to those for whom full-time study is not possible. You will examine social processes and their influence on individuals, groups, societies, institutions, and states, developing both your theoretical understanding and your ability to conduct and interpret social research. The programme engages with contemporary social questions as well as the intellectual traditions that have made sociology the distinctive discipline it is today.

Sociology graduates are valued across a wide range of careers because the ability to understand social systems, analyse inequality, and think critically about structures of power is genuinely transferable. Destinations include roles in social research, public policy, social work, education, journalism, human resources, health and social care, community development, marketing and communications, and the third sector. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, social work, or a related field, using the degree as the foundation for further professional or academic development.
