Sociology

Sociology is the systematic study of society, examining the social structures, institutions, and relationships through which human life is organised and the cultural forces that shape how people think, act, and experience the world. It investigates why social inequalities persist, how power is distributed and challenged, how social change happens, and what role institutions including families, schools, workplaces, and states play in reproducing or transforming social arrangements. At Coventry University, this part-time degree explores these questions with a focus on understanding social inequalities and developing the intellectual tools to engage with efforts to address them. You will study sociological theory from classical foundations to contemporary debates, examine research methods including both quantitative and qualitative approaches, and investigate topics such as class, gender, race, migration, crime, education, and globalisation. A placement or work experience year is built into the programme, and a year abroad is also available, both of which add experiential and international dimensions to your academic study.

You will develop critical thinking, the capacity to evaluate evidence, and the ability to construct arguments about complex social phenomena. Research skills in both quantitative and qualitative methods give you the practical tools to investigate social questions independently.
